Okoye Must Prove Himself, Says Former Udinese Goalkeeper

Former Udinese goalkeeper Gigi Turci has said Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye still has technical aspects of his game to improve despite establishing himself as the Serie A club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Okoye recently returned for pre-season training with Udinese ahead of the 2026/27 campaign following an impressive season in which he produced a string of crucial saves and kept 10 clean sheets to help the club secure important results in Serie A.

Despite those performances, Turci believes the Nigerian international still has room for improvement.

Speaking to Messaggero Veneto, the former goalkeeper praised Okoye's physical attributes but questioned the completeness of his technique.

"He's physically impressive, but his technique isn't complete. Without Sava and Nunziante behind him, we need a second," Turci said.

The former shot-stopper added that Okoye must now justify his status as Udinese's first-choice goalkeeper.

"Now he has to prove himself."

Despite the criticism, Okoye has made steady progress since joining Udinese and is widely expected to retain the No. 1 spot for the new season.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper will have the opportunity to answer Turci's assessment with his performances as Udinese begin their 2026/27 Serie A campaign.
