Team Nigeria made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday, recording the country's first-ever victory in 3x3 basketball with a 21-17 triumph over the Cayman Islands in their Pool A opener.

Nigeria sealed the landmark win with one minute and 36 seconds remaining, producing a composed display of sharp shooting and disciplined defence to overcome a spirited Cayman Islands side.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Nigerian basketball at the Commonwealth Games and provides an encouraging start to the team's campaign in the fast-paced format.

National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade joined the players and officials in celebrating the historic achievement after the final buzzer, praising the team's determination while urging them to remain focused on the task ahead.

"This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination. Enjoy this victory, but stay focused because the journey has only just begun. Nigeria believes in you, and we are confident you can achieve even greater success at these Games," Olopade said.

The win also gives Team Nigeria an early boost in Glasgow, where the country's athletes are scheduled to compete in boxing and para powerlifting later on Friday.

Nigeria is represented by a 74-member contingent across 10 sports at the Games, with the National Sports Commission targeting a haul of between 16 and 20 gold medals.
