Liverpool’s record signing Denise O’Sullivan is set to leave the club this summer, just six months after arriving from the United States.
The Republic of Ireland international joined the Reds in January for a reported £300,000 fee and has impressed during her short spell at the club. However, a return to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is now considered the most likely outcome, with Gotham FC emerging as favourites for her signature.
O’Sullivan made 13 appearances for Liverpool, including nine league outings, and helped Gareth Taylor’s side reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals.
Reports suggest the proposed move could initially be structured as a one-year loan with an obligation to buy, with Liverpool expected to receive a significant fee.
The 32-year-old’s decision is understood to be personal, as she looks to return to the United States where she spent nine seasons with North Carolina Courage, making more than 150 appearances and captaining the club.
Liverpool are expected to remain active in the transfer market, but O’Sullivan’s departure and the failure to secure goalkeeper Jennifer Falk on a permanent deal represent setbacks in their rebuilding plans.
