France, Spain Battle for Place in World Cup Final

France will look to move within one win of a third FIFA World Cup title when they take on Spain in Tuesday's semi-final.

Les Bleus have reached the last two World Cup finals, lifting the trophy in Russia in 2018 before suffering a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Argentina in the 2022 final in Qatar, despite Kylian Mbappé's memorable hat-trick.

Spain, meanwhile, are chasing only their second World Cup crown, having claimed their maiden title at South Africa 2010. Despite their rich footballing pedigree, La Roja have just one World Cup triumph to their name.

Many observers consider Spain one of the strongest teams at this year's tournament. After opening their campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde, Luis de la Fuente's side have grown in confidence with each passing game.

Their toughest test yet, however, will be containing France's fearsome attack led by Mbappé.

The Real Madrid star heads into the semi-final with eight goals, level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

France also boast an array of attacking talent, with Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise providing pace, creativity and a constant threat in the final third. Their movement and ability to stretch defences have created space for Mbappé throughout the tournament.

Didier Deschamps can also call upon Paris Saint-Germain pair Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué, both of whom have impressed with their energy and attacking quality.

France will be keen to banish the painful memories of their defeat to Argentina in Doha four years ago and would relish another meeting with the reigning champions in the final should Lionel Scaloni's side overcome England in the other semi-final.

The tournament also marks the end of an era for France, with Deschamps set to step down after 14 years in charge. Already among the select few to have won the World Cup as both a player and a coach, the 57-year-old will be hoping to end his remarkable tenure by lifting the trophy once again.

Despite France's pedigree and recent World Cup success, Deschamps has insisted Spain go into the contest as favourites.
