The Bayelsa State Government has officially unveiled experienced football tactician Abdul Maikaba as the new Technical Adviser of Bayelsa United, tasking him with leading the club back to the Nigeria Premier Football League following its relegation.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Thursday, was conducted by the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr Peter Akpe, who said Governor Douye Diri had mandated the club’s newly inaugurated Interim Management Board, chaired by Dr Peter Singabele, to secure an immediate return to the top flight.
Akpe reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring Bayelsa United to the NPFL, expressing confidence that the new technical crew possesses the expertise needed to achieve the objective.
"As a government, we are committed to ensuring Bayelsa United returns to the NPFL next season. That is the responsibility given to the Interim Management Board, and we believe the new technical crew has the experience and capacity to achieve that objective," he said.
He described Maikaba’s appointment as a clear reflection of the government's resolve to reposition Bayelsa United among Nigeria’s leading football clubs.
The deputy governor also instructed the coaching staff to build a squad rooted in local talent, directing that about 70 per cent of the players should be recruited from within Bayelsa State to strengthen grassroots football development.
Maikaba signed a one-year contract with the Prosperity Boys, with an option for renewal based on performance. He will be assisted by former Go-Round FC head coach Ngozi Elechi as the club begins preparations for its promotion campaign.
