Stokes Could Return as England Captain for Third Test Against New Zealand

Ben Stokes could return as England captain as early as next week for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson are currently under investigation following an incident at a London nightclub in which they breached England’s midnight curfew. A member of security staff was also reportedly struck by a Saracens rugby player during the incident.

It is understood the disciplinary process is now moving towards a conclusion that could clear the pair to return to action, although an official decision may not be confirmed until after the ongoing second Test at The Oval.

While all outcomes remain possible, there is growing expectation that Stokes will be available to lead England in Nottingham, with the third Test scheduled to begin on Thursday, 25 June.

Both players were ruled out of the second Test while the investigation was ongoing, but they remain eligible for domestic cricket. Stokes is named in Durham’s squad for their County Championship fixture against Northamptonshire, while Atkinson is set to feature for Surrey against Glamorgan.
