Liverpool FC captain Virgil van Dijk has delivered a blunt assessment of the club’s disappointing season, admitting that results and performances have fallen far below expectations.
For the first time since the 2015–16 campaign, Liverpool have been beaten by rivals Manchester United in both Premier League meetings, with manager Arne Slot suffering his 11th league defeat of the season.
The Reds are now out of all domestic and European competitions and sit six points behind United, who occupy third place in the Premier League as they battle for a Champions League qualification spot.
Speaking after Sunday’s defeat, Van Dijk addressed supporters and did not hold back in his criticism of the team’s campaign.
“I’m not here to make excuses. It’s been a very disappointing season, an unacceptable season for us, and it’s tough. We shouldn’t feel sorry for ourselves whatsoever,” he said.
“We have to work, we have to turn this around and make sure that next season these things don’t happen because it’s not Liverpool.”
