‘Too High a Mountain’ as Leinster’s Wait Continues

0

Leinster Rugby arrived in Bilbao hoping to secure a fifth European star and finally end the heartbreak that had followed four consecutive Champions Cup final defeats.

Returning to the city where they last lifted the trophy in 2018, Leinster believed the Basque venue could provide the perfect setting for redemption. Instead, they suffered another painful setback as a dominant Bordeaux side overwhelmed them in a one-sided final.

While players and coaches had often spoken about the “fine margins” that separated them from glory in previous defeats, this loss exposed a far wider gap. Bordeaux produced a ruthless display of power, precision, and attacking brilliance that left Leinster chasing shadows for much of the contest.

Leinster made an encouraging start when Tommy O’Brien crossed early, but Bordeaux quickly seized control through the outstanding influence of Maxime Lucu, Matthieu Jalibert, and Louis Bielle-Biarrey.

The defining blow came just before halftime when Yoram Moefana intercepted a pass from Harry Byrne and raced under the posts, extending Bordeaux’s lead to a crushing 35-7 advantage by the break.

Leinster showed greater fight and composure in the second half, while Bordeaux lost some of their early fluidity, but the damage had already been done. The French Top 14 side eventually sealed an emphatic 41-19 victory to claim the title.

Reflecting on the defeat, Leinster captain Caelan Doris admitted the challenge had ultimately proven beyond them.

“A big part of our season has been about finding a way back from difficult moments,” Doris said. “We’ve shown composure many times when trailing, but despite our response in the second half, it was simply too high a mountain to climb.”
