Gavi has backed Argentina to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting they will remain favourites “as long as” Lionel Messi is still playing.
The Barcelona midfielder praised Messi’s influence on the Argentine national team, saying the Inter Miami star continues to inspire the squad with his experience, leadership, and winning mentality. According to Gavi, Argentina remain one of the strongest teams in world football because of the presence of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Speaking during a recent interview, Gavi said Argentina have the quality, balance, and mentality needed to defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar in 2022. He added that Messi’s impact alone makes them favourites for any major tournament.
Argentina are expected to head into the 2026 World Cup among the top contenders alongside countries like France, Brazil, England, and Spain. Lionel Scaloni’s side have maintained impressive form since their triumph in Qatar, with a squad blending experienced stars and emerging young talents.
Messi, who will be 39 during the tournament, has not officially confirmed whether he will retire from international football before the competition. However, many fans and pundits believe he could make one final World Cup appearance.
Gavi’s comments have already sparked debate among football supporters, especially with several nations preparing strong squads ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament that will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
