The Esports Federation of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission have begun moves to introduce structured esports programmes into Nigerian universities as part of efforts to boost digital innovation and youth development.

During a meeting at the NUC headquarters in Abuja, both bodies discussed plans for an academic esports framework that would cover research, gaming psychology, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and African game development within the Nigerian university system.

Officials said the initiative would also include policies on student welfare, mental health monitoring, anti-addiction measures, ethical competition, and professional coaching standards. The aim is to ensure esports development aligns with academic excellence and responsible participation.

EFN Vice President Clinton Agbor, alongside board members Ikechukwu Okoye and Ifeanyi Elumeziem, represented federation president Yahaya Maikori during the discussions.

Both organisations expressed confidence that integrating esports into tertiary education could position Nigeria as a leading hub for digital creativity and emerging technology in Africa, while creating new opportunities for students in gaming, innovation, and research.
