Atletico Madrid shock 10-man Barcelona at Nou Camp

0

Atletico Madrid moved a big step closer to the Champions League semi-finals by beating Barcelona, who were down to 10 men. Atletico hadn’t won at the Nou Camp since 2006, but goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth gave them the first-leg lead in the quarter-final.

Barcelona played well for much of the game, but a foul on Giuliano Simeone by Pau Cubarsi just before half-time changed everything. Cubarsi was first shown a yellow card, but after a video review, the referee upgraded it to a red. Alvarez then scored a stunning free-kick to make it 1-0.

Barcelona fought back in the second half and came close when Marcus Rashford hit the crossbar from a free-kick. But Atletico scored again, with Sorloth finishing off a low cross from Matteo Ruggeri.

Barcelona now face a tough task when they travel to Madrid for the second leg next Tuesday.
