Akil Howson will make history as the first Black match official to take part in an FA Cup final when Chelsea face Manchester City.
The 35-year-old has been appointed as an assistant referee for the final at Wembley, marking a major milestone for diversity in English football officiating. He has been part of the Premier League’s top refereeing group for the past three seasons.
Darren England will take charge of the match as the main referee for the first time, supported by a full officiating team including VAR officials.
Howson’s appointment reflects ongoing efforts by football authorities to create more opportunities for underrepresented groups in refereeing at the highest level.
