Phil Foden’s stoppage-time appearance in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal felt like a “charity sub,” according to former England captain Wayne Rooney. The 25-year-old came on in the 90th minute as City sealed a 2-0 victory at Wembley but has struggled for playing time recently, starting only four of City’s last 13 games and failing to score in 20 appearances.
Foden has collected 18 trophies since breaking into City’s first team and was called up to England’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. However, there are doubts about whether he will make the squad for this summer’s World Cup, especially after missing last week’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid, which City lost 5-1 on aggregate.
Rooney said it feels strange that such a top player isn’t getting more minutes. While Foden will be happy City won the cup, he would have wanted to make a bigger impact on the pitch.
