Jonathan Wheatley has left Audi F1 immediately, a day after reports linked him to Aston Martin. Audi cited “personal reasons” for his departure. Mattia Binotto will temporarily take over his responsibilities while Audi decides on a long-term plan.
Wheatley wanted to return to the UK later this year, and this exit marks Audi’s third management shake-up in under two years. He will serve a gardening leave before potentially joining another team.
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has reportedly offered Wheatley the chance to run the team under technical chief Adrian Newey, freeing Newey to focus on car design. Aston Martin are currently struggling, last in the championship with a car that has development and engine issues.
