Evan Ferguson, striker for AS Roma, will miss the World Cup play-off for the Republic of Ireland after being ruled out for the season with an ankle injury. He will return to parent club Brighton and Hove Albion FC for surgery.
The 21-year-old scored three goals in qualifying but missed key wins over Portugal and Hungary. Ireland face Czech Republic national football team in the play-off semi-final on 26 March.
