A French judge has rejected Cardiff City's claim for over £100m in compensation after the death of footballer Emiliano Sala.
Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson died when their Piper Malibu plane crashed into the English Channel on 21 January 2019. The Argentine striker was on his way to join Cardiff City from FC Nantes for a £15m transfer.
Cardiff City had been seeking more than €120m (£104m), arguing they lost potential income because Sala could have helped keep the team in the Premier League. But a court in Nantes dismissed their claim and ordered Cardiff to pay around £400,000 to cover legal costs and damages to FC Nantes.
The payment must be made immediately, even if Cardiff decides to appeal. The club is still considering whether to challenge the ruling. Sala’s mother, Mercedes Taffarel, was present in court alongside Cardiff representatives.
