McIlroy says The Players Championship does not need to be Golf’s fifth major

Rory McIlroy says the Players Championship has a stronger identity than the US PGA Championship, but he doesn’t think it should be called men’s golf’s fifth major. The 36-year-old from Northern Ireland completed the career Grand Slam in April after winning all four majors.

Although the Players, held each March at TPC Sawgrass, is often called the ‘fifth major,’ McIlroy says men’s golf doesn’t need to add another. He praised the tournament for its course, venue, and fan experience, calling it one of the best in the world, but stressed he’s a traditionalist and values the four established majors.

McIlroy also suggested the US PGA Championship should return to August to restore its identity as the final major of the year. He believes the Players Championship doesn’t need any extra label—it already stands out on its own.
