Macclesfield’s FA Cup adventure ended in heartbreak, but the non-league side created memories that will last a lifetime.
After stunning holders Crystal Palace in the previous round, Macclesfield pushed Brentford all the way at Moss Rose. For 70 minutes, the National League North side matched their Premier League opponents before a cruel own goal from Sam Heathcote handed Brentford the win.
Despite the defeat, Macclesfield earned huge praise, with Brentford boss Keith Andrews applauding their spirit and togetherness. Manager John Rooney said he could not be prouder of his team, who went toe-to-toe with two top-flight clubs and only exited because of an unfortunate moment.
The dream may be over, but Macclesfield’s FA Cup run will be remembered fondly by players and fans alike.
