Atalanta completed a stunning comeback to beat Borussia Dortmund and reach the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
After losing the first leg 2-0 in Germany, Atalanta scored twice in the first half through Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta, with Mario Pasalic adding a third in the 57th minute. Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi pulled one back in the 75th minute, making extra time look likely.
But in the final seconds of stoppage time, a VAR-checked penalty was awarded after Ramy Bensebaini fouled Nikola Krstovic. Lazar Samardzic calmly converted, sending Atalanta through while Bensebaini and substitute Nico Schlotterbeck were sent off for dissent.
Atalanta will now face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the last 16 after an extraordinary fightback celebrated wildly by the home fans.
