Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will need surgery on his hamstring and is expected to be out for at least three months.
The 28-year-old Uruguay international has been an important player for Spurs this season, but he picked up the injury during last week’s Premier League loss to Bournemouth. Because he is likely to miss most of the rest of the season, Tottenham may now consider signing another midfielder.
Bentancur is not the only player injured. Team-mate Mohammed Kudus is also sidelined with a thigh problem and is not expected to return until after the international break in March.
Earlier this month, Spurs also sold forward Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35 million.
Bentancur’s injury comes at a difficult time for manager Thomas Frank, who is under growing pressure as results continue to struggle. Tottenham are currently 14th in the Premier League and were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday after losing to Aston Villa.
Fans showed their frustration by booing the team at half-time when Spurs were 2-0 down. Supporters are also planning a protest at Saturday’s home match against West Ham.
Fan group Change for Tottenham has asked fans to bring yellow banners, flags, and scarves to the game as part of the protest. This follows criticism from the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, which accused the club of losing ambition after meetings with senior officials.
Supporters say they are unhappy with the club’s transfer strategy, ongoing injury problems, poor performances, and high ticket prices. They believe the squad needs serious investment and want the club to keep its promises about aiming for trophies.
