Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time in five years, beating Morocco 1-0, but the final was overshadowed by late controversy. The match was goalless until extra time, when Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute.
The drama came earlier when Senegal temporarily walked off after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz had his Panenka attempt saved by Edouard Mendy. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw was frustrated after a previous goal for his side was disallowed following a VAR review.
Despite the tense finish, Senegal held on to claim the trophy, denying Morocco their first AFCON title since 1976.
