KKR let Mustafizur go after request from Indian cricket board

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman after being instructed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). No official reason was given for the move, but it comes amid heightened tensions between India and Bangladesh.

The decision follows recent political incidents, including protests in India over events in Bangladesh, which have contributed to strained relations. Mustafizur, 30, was the only Bangladeshi player bought in the IPL 2026 auction for around £760,000 by KKR, a team majority-owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.

KKR confirmed the release was carried out following proper procedures and BCCI approval. The franchise is allowed to sign a replacement player under IPL rules.

Mustafizur has a strong IPL track record, having previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals, taking 60 wickets in 65 matches. The 19th season of the IPL starts on 26 March.
