Great Start for Carrick as United beat City in Manchester derby

Michael Carrick got off to a perfect start in his second spell as Manchester United’s caretaker manager as United beat Manchester City and dealt a big blow to City’s Premier League title hopes.

Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed the win at a lively Old Trafford, which finally felt alive again after weeks of frustration. Sir Alex Ferguson watched on happily from the stands, while United fans even mocked City star Erling Haaland as he was substituted late on.

City stayed in the game mainly thanks to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several excellent saves to stop Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo. But he couldn’t stop United from taking the lead when captain Bruno Fernandes led a quick counter-attack and set up Mbeumo, who finished calmly.

Eleven minutes later, United made it 2-0. City defender Rico Lewis was caught out, allowing Dorgu to get in front of him and score from Matheus Cunha’s low cross.

United had three goals ruled out for offside and Diallo hit the post late on, while City struggled to respond. Haaland continued his poor run of form, scoring just once in his last
