Djokovic Leaves the Players’ Union he helped set up

Novak Djokovic says he has completely cut ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the player union he helped set up, because he is unhappy with how it is being run. The 38-year-old cited concerns over transparency, governance, and how his views and image were being used.

Djokovic co-founded the PTPA with Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in 2021 to give tennis players a stronger and more independent voice. However, he said he no longer agrees with the direction the organisation has taken.

Earlier in 2025, the PTPA launched legal action against tennis governing bodies such as the ATP and WTA, accusing them of anti-competitive practices and poor treatment of players. Both tours strongly denied the claims. Djokovic said at the time he did not fully support the lawsuit.

In a statement, the 24-time Grand Slam champion said he remains proud of the original idea behind the PTPA but feels his values no longer align with the organisation. He added that he now wants to focus on his tennis, family, and contributing to the sport in other ways.

The PTPA has campaigned against what it calls an unsustainable tennis schedule and issues such as late-night drug testing, but not all players back the legal action, including world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
