Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United fans were given a glimpse of the club’s glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson during their 2-0 win over Manchester City, and hopes it signals a brighter future under interim boss Michael Carrick.
Carrick, appointed until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, oversaw an impressive derby victory at Old Trafford, with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu. Rooney said the atmosphere inside the stadium felt different and reminded him of the Ferguson era.
Speaking on the BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said younger fans, who have known little success since Ferguson’s departure, finally saw a United team playing with energy, belief, and confidence. He praised the bravery on the ball and resilience shown by the players, adding that the crowd clearly felt reconnected with the team.
Rooney hopes the performance is a sign of what United can build on under Carrick in the remaining games of the season.
