Carrick, a former England midfielder and Manchester United player with 464 appearances, also managed Middlesbrough for two and a half years, guiding them to the Championship play-offs in 2022-23.
Darren Fletcher has been overseeing the team temporarily, but Carrick is now the leading candidate to take over as interim manager when players return to training.
