Xabi Alonso says Mbappé could Replicate Ronaldo’s Historic Impact at Real Madrid

French star Kylian Mbappé is closing in on Real Madrid history, and coach Xabi Alonso believes he is following the same path as his idol Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbappé has been in unstoppable form, scoring 55 goals in 2025. He is now just four goals away from matching Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year, set in 2013.

Spanish media have frequently compared Mbappé to Ronaldo, who remains Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer.

Alonso agrees with the comparison.

“Kylian is on his way to making history at Real Madrid like Cristiano did,” Alonso said.
“It’s not just his importance to the team, but his ambition and the number of goals he scores.”

He added that Mbappé shares Ronaldo’s rare mindset and leadership:

“Kylian is one of the chosen ones. He wants to do everything at the highest level and inspire others. That ambition is something he has in common with Cristiano.”

Mbappé won last season’s European Golden Shoe and finished as La Liga’s top scorer with 31 goals.
This season, he has stepped up even further with 16 goals in 15 league games and nine in five Champions League matches.

As a boy, Mbappé covered his bedroom walls with posters of Ronaldo — and now he is close to breaking his records.

He will have the chance to add to his tally when Real Madrid host Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Madrid then face Manchester City in the Champions League on December 10, followed by league games against Alavésand Sevilla — giving Mbappé four matches to catch Ronaldo.

Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games for Madrid. Mbappé has already reached 69 goals in 79 matches since joining from PSG in 2024.
