Van Dijk says Liverpools set piece struggles are a killer

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says the team is struggling with set-pieces, and it is causing problems for them.

So far this season, Liverpool have conceded 12 goals from set-pieces, the most in the Premier League alongside Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

In their 2-1 win over Wolves, Santiago Bueno scored from a corner, and last week, Richarlison scored for Tottenham after Liverpool failed to clear a corner.

Van Dijk said the team has defended set-pieces well at times, but they have still let in too many goals and don’t score enough from them.

He added the main problem is the second phase of set-pieces, which he calls the “killer,” and he does not think it is a mental issue.

Excluding penalties, Liverpool have only scored three goals from set-pieces this season, and their goal difference of minus nine is their worst in the Premier League.

Van Dijk said they need to improve, and the only way to do that is through training.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said the team rarely scores from set-pieces and also concedes too many, but they are making some progress by still winning games even after conceding.

Slot added Liverpool have been unlucky in some set-piece situations, and after 18 games, they know improvement is needed.

Liverpool’s third league win in a row moved them up to fourth place in the Premier League table.
