England manager Thomas Tuchel says he might keep his substitute players inside during World Cup matches next summer because the weather could be extremely hot.
Tuchel explained that high temperatures in the US, Canada, and Mexico — where the 2026 World Cup will take place — could make it unsafe for players to sit outside on the bench.
He said he doesn’t like the idea because he wants his players close to the action, but if staying indoors helps them stay fresh and perform better when they come on, he’ll consider it.
Experts have warned that many of the stadiums could face dangerous heat, and even wildfires or hurricanes, during the tournament. A recent report said that 10 out of the 16 venues are at serious risk of extreme heat.
Tuchel said the heat will affect how teams play, making matches slower and less intense because players can’t run as much in such hot conditions. He added that England are already preparing for the weather, using cooling systems and special training methods.
He also said the team must be ready for long travel distances, humidity, and delays caused by storms. According to him, the key is having the right mindset and being ready for challenges.
