Aryna Sabalenka lost in straight sets to Nick Kyrgios in a much-hyped Battle of the Sexes-style match that failed to live up to expectations. The women’s world number one was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by Kyrgios in Dubai in what turned out to be a low-intensity exhibition match.
The build-up promised excitement, with both players heavily promoting the contest. Sabalenka said she would “kick Nick’s ass,” while Kyrgios claimed the event would attract new fans to tennis. However, the match itself felt more like an off-season show than a serious competition.
Despite the loss, four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka said she enjoyed the experience and felt she played well, adding that she would like to face Kyrgios again in the future.
Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist now ranked 671 after long injury problems, played at a relaxed pace and focused on keeping points short. He was pleased to win in just over an hour as he continues working towards a possible full return to the ATP Tour in 2026.
The two players, who appeared friendly throughout, shared laughs during the match and embraced at the net afterwards. Kyrgios praised Sabalenka, calling her a great champion and saying he enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the event.
