Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is “ruining his legacy” at the club.
Salah recently said he felt Liverpool had “thrown him under the bus” and that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had completely fallen apart.
Rooney thinks Slot needs to show he is in charge and should leave the Egypt international out of both the Champions League match against Inter Milan on Tuesday and the league game with Brighton next Saturday.
According to Rooney, Slot should tell Salah: “You’re not travelling with the team. What you said isn’t acceptable. Go to Afcon and let things cool off.” Rooney added that if he were in Slot’s shoes, he wouldn’t put Salah in the team at all.
Rooney also said Salah must either fix his issues with Slot or move on from Liverpool, and that the situation needs a quick resolution.
Salah, 33, has scored 250 goals in 420 games for Liverpool but hasn’t started the last three matches. He didn’t even play in the 3-3 draw at Elland Road against Leeds United on Saturday.
After that match, Salah told reporters he used to have a good relationship with Slot, but now they barely have one. He said Liverpool had made him the scapegoat and that someone wanted him to take all the blame.
Salah—whose 29 Premier League goals helped Liverpool win the league last season—signed a new two-year contract in April.
Rooney questioned why Salah would go public like this and said: “He is completely destroying his legacy at Liverpool. It would be sad for him to throw everything away. He has handled this the wrong way.”
