Own Goal Hands Sudan a Win Against Equatorial Guinea

0

Sudan secured their first Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) win since 2012, edging closer to the knockout stage after Saul Coco’s own goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Casablanca.

The own goal, which came 16 minutes from time, ended Sudan’s eight-game Afcon winless streak, including a loss to Algeria four days earlier. The match, the first-ever Afcon meeting between the two teams, was marked by missed chances on both sides.

With this win, Sudan join Burkina Faso and Algeria on three points in Group E. Equatorial Guinea, who also lost their opener to Burkina Faso, will need a win against Algeria in their final group game to stay in contention for the knockout stage. Sudan will face Burkina Faso in their closing group match.
