Manchester United were shown just how good Europe’s top teams are on Wednesday night, as Lyon – the eight-time Women’s Champions League winners – completely outplayed them in a 3-0 defeat at Leigh Sports Village.
United struggled badly in the first half, managing no shots on target and only one touch in Lyon’s penalty area. It was a tough and humbling experience for a team playing in their first-ever Champions League main draw.
But manager Marc Skinner said the team can learn a lot from the loss.
"I’m proud of the players. There was a lot to learn. After every big defeat, we always come back better," he said.
He added that the players are giving everything, and although losing hurts, it’s part of the process.
"We’ve already qualified for the play-offs. That was our goal, and at Manchester United, it always has to be our goal to go through."
