Former Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has died at the age of 79 at his home in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by his family.

Hicks owned Liverpool alongside George Gillett between 2007 and 2010. After running into serious financial problems, they eventually sold the club to Fenway Sports Group.

In a statement, Hicks’ six children said that being a father was his proudest role and praised him for his love, generosity, and devotion to his family.

His time in charge of Liverpool was controversial, as many fans were unhappy with rising debt and unfulfilled promises to improve the club’s stadium. Liverpool said they sent their condolences to his family and friends.

Outside football, Hicks also owned the Dallas Stars ice hockey team and the Texas Rangers baseball team. During his ownership, the Stars won division titles and lifted the Stanley Cup in 1999, while the Rangers won multiple division titles and finished as runners-up in the 2010 World Series.

Hicks is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cinda.
