Newcastle United defender Dan Burn is facing time on the sidelines after suffering a broken rib and a punctured lung in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland.
The 33-year-old was hurt in a first-half 50/50 challenge with Sunderland right-back Nordi Mukiele, whose knee struck Burn’s side. Although Burn initially tried to continue, he was later replaced by Fabian Schar and taken to hospital after struggling to breathe at half-time.
Head coach Eddie Howe confirmed the seriousness of the injury and admitted Newcastle are now short of defensive options, with Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth already sidelined.
Burn is expected to miss several matches over the festive period and into the new year, with Howe set to give a further update at his press conference on Tuesday.
