Kenyan darts player David Munyua says people back home have gone “crazy” after his shock win over world number 18 Mike de Decker at the PDC World Championship.
The 30-year-old, who works full-time as a vet, was playing outside Africa for the first time and became the first Kenyan to compete at Alexandra Palace. He pulled off a stunning comeback, recovering from two sets down to beat De Decker 3-2.
Munyua levelled the match by winning the third and fourth sets in deciding legs, then produced an incredible 135 finish in the final set to seal the victory. He said the reaction in Kenya has been overwhelming, with fans celebrating the result as a huge moment for the country and for African darts.
Munyua thanked his work colleagues for supporting his sporting dream and said darts is a game anyone can play, hoping it will grow across Africa. He admitted his hands were shaking when he threw the winning dart, describing the moment as “do or die”.
He will next face either Kevin Doets or Matthew Dennant in the second round. De Decker congratulated Munyua but criticised the crowd behaviour at Alexandra Palace, saying booing and whistling should not be accepted.
