Newcastle Red Bulls Sign Wales Full-Back Liam Williams On One-Year Deal

Newcastle Red Bulls have signed Wales and British & Irish Lions full-back Liam Williams on a one-year contract, adding another high-profile name to their squad under new ownership.

The 34-year-old, who left Saracens at the end of last season, had been without a club and was training with former side Cardiff. He has not played a competitive game since suffering a knee injury in Wales’ Six Nations opener against France on 31 January.

“It’s a good opportunity to experience something new, and I can’t wait to get started,” Williams told the club’s website. Describing it as “an exciting time to be joining Newcastle,” he said he was impressed by director of rugby Steve Diamond’s vision for the team’s future.

Williams becomes the 14th signing since energy drinks giant Red Bull took control of the club, rebranding them as Newcastle Red Bulls. They begin their league campaign on Friday with a home fixture against Saracens, Williams’ former side.

With 93 Wales caps and five Test appearances for the Lions, Williams brings vast international pedigree. He remains determined to reach a century of appearances for his country, keeping the door open for a return to the national team.

“I’ve not called time on that, but it would be impossible without a club,” Williams told the BBC earlier this month. “If I start playing regularly and there are some injuries in the back three, then Steve [Tandy, Wales head coach] may give me a call.”

Known for his aerial strength, counter-attacking flair, and big-match temperament, Williams is expected to provide both leadership and experience to a Newcastle side undergoing major transition.
