Chelsea Sign Girma for women's world record fee

USA defender Naomi Girma said joining Chelsea was an "easy choice" after completing her move for a women's world record fee.

The 24-year-old has signed a contract until summer 2029 after the Women's Super League (WSL) leaders this week agreed to pay San Diego Wave about £900,000.

"I'm so happy and really excited to be here. It doesn't feel real," said Girma, before being introduced to fans at Stamford Bridge for Sunday's WSL match against Arsenal.

"There are a lot of things about Chelsea that made me want to come here - the culture, the winning mentality, staff and players.

"It's a top environment to learn and grow in. Right now, that's what I'm looking to do.

The fee exceeds the previous record of £685,000, when Bay FC signed Racheal Kundananji last February.

Chelsea set the British transfer record in signing Mayra Ramirez for £384,000 in January 2024.

Girma told BBC Sport: "I'm really excited to play alongside (England defender) Millie (Bright).
