Aston Villa defender Pau Torres has revealed he was close to joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.
The defender has been part of Unai Emery's rise at Villa Park - but he could have been turning out for Carlo Ancelotti's Real, had they not decided to opt for David Alaba on a free transfer instead.
Torres moved to Villa this summer for an initial £33m from Villarreal.
“No, I didn’t reject it. I would never reject a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona, you can never reject them,” Torres told Relevo.
“There were conversations but finally Madrid had a market option that was very good, which was to bring Alaba on a free transfer. It is very difficult to find that type of free player.
“In the end, for a transfer to occur, many circumstances have to occur and at that moment it did not happen and absolutely nothing happens, one continues working and one’s dreams remain intact. In that sense, focused on mine.”
