‘He wants to win trophies’ – Paul Merson believes Chelsea midfielder could leave club

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has claimed that Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez could leave the club soon due to the Blues’ poor form.

According to Merson, the Argentina World Cup winner wants to win trophies after joining Chelsea for a huge fee.

Recall that Fernandez became the British record signing after joining Chelsea in a £107 million move from Benfica on the winter transfer deadline day earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was also linked with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United after his fine 2022 FIFA World Cup outing last year.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Special show, Merson insisted that Fernandez could look to leave if the west London club continue to struggle under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Merson said: “My worry would be Enzo Fernandez. I don’t think he hangs around if it carries on like this… £100 million player and a World Cup-winner.

“These players don’t want to play middle-of-the-table football. They have got the money. They want to win trophies. That is what it is all about, winning trophies. They all get big money now.”
