EPL: Lampard’s reappointment more by accident – Robbie Savage

Former Manchester United midfielder, Robbie Savage has described the appointment of Frank Lampard by Chelsea as more by accident than design.

Chelsea announced during the week that Lampard, who was sacked by the club in 2021, will work as their caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Savage raised questions concerning the decisions being made by those now in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Recollecting events at Stamford Bridge in his column on The Mirror, Savage noted Lampard was sacked by Chelsea and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who won the Champions League four months later and was also shockingly dismissed last September by the new owners.

He noted that on his appointment, Todd Boehly and co told the club’s supporters that Potter was on a long-term ‘project’ at the club and went on to sign players with about £600 million for the former Brighton manager.

And following the sack of Potter last weekend, Savage said the Blues “have gone full circle by bringing Lampard back.

“It’s remarkable how they have gone full circle in little more than two years – more by accident than design.”
