Ten Hag under fire over decision on Wout Weghorst

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson has criticized Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag over his decision to play striker Wout Weghorst in the No. 10 role against Liverpool last weekend.

Merson said Ten Hag got his tactics wrong against Liverpool when he opted to play Weghorst in the No. 10 position.

Recall that Liverpool thrashed Man United 7-0 in a Premier League tie at Anfield on Sunday.

Ten Hag has been playing Weghorst out of position for Manchester United in recent weeks.

Initially, Weghorst played ahead of Bruno Fernandes, with Marcus Rashford on the left-wing, while one of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho or Antony started on the opposite flank.

But in recent games, the players have not changed, but the positions have, with Weghorst moved to No.10 to allow Rashford to play up top.

“The manager, for me, has been getting away with it,” Merson wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

“Yes, he has done great in a way. But Wout Weghorst as a No 10, I am not having that. How is he a No 10? How is the manager getting away with that?

“It is Manchester United Football Club and you have got Weghorst as a 10 – he can’t turn and run, he can’t pass through the eye of a needle. What is the thinking?

“I am not blaming Ten Hag because they lost, but why play Marcus Rashford against Virgil van Dijk? He plays out wide every week.

“You have got Liverpool’s weakest defender in Trent Alexander-Arnold having a free ride. Trent would not have believed his luck.

“Man Utd got it tactically wrong. I could not believe it when I saw the set-up of the team – there is only one manager who could have gotten away with that and that is Ten Hag.”
