EPL: You’re selfish, playing for yourselves – Conte slams Tottenham players after latest result

Tottenham boss, Antonio Conte has slammed his players following their 3-3 draw in the Premier League against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Italian accused his players of being ‘selfish’, lacking fight and ‘not playing for the team’.

The north Londoners were 3-1 up in the 74th minute and looked set to claim all three at St Mary’s with second-half goals from Harry Kane and Ivan Perisic.

But Theo Walcott halved the deficit just moments later after some shambolic defending by the visitors and minutes later the Saints were granted a controversial penalty in stoppage time, which James Ward-Prowse dispatched.

Conte was visibly angry with his own players and questioned their commitment and fight – both this season and for the past 20 years.

“For me this is unacceptable. You are winning 3-1, you are in control of the game and you concede two goals and risk [more] because Fraser [Forster] also made a fantastic save in one situation.

“The problem is that we showed again that we are not a team. We are 11 players that go onto the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart. And when you are not a team,

“[The players need] to understand we play for the badge. And I see only 11 players that play for themselves.”

Conte said he was not in the business of defending or making excuses for players who have not done what they are supposed to on the pitch, insisting the club do not pay coaches and players to continue to make excuses for failure.
