Qatar 2022: Why I was never shocked over Ronaldo being dropped by Portugal – Bernardo Silva

Portugal international, Bernardo Silva has revealed that the decision to drop captain Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal’s World Cup last-16 game against Switzerland was ‘not a shock’ to him because the players were told the news two hours before kick-off.

Ronaldo, 37, was named on the bench for Portugal’s tie against Switzerland at Lusail Stadium, having scored just once in the group stages.

However, the former Manchester United forward reacted angrily after being taken off in their 2-1 loss against South Korea – something former head coach Fernando Santos was not pleased with.

To make matters worse for Ronaldo, his replacement, Goncalo Ramos, netted a hat-trick for Portugal as they thrashed Switzerland 6-1.

Speaking on the development, the Manchester City midfielder told Record, “Between us, we talked and asked ‘could it be, would it not be?’, because the players talked.

“But we only found out about the team in the locker room when we arrived at the stadium two hours before the game.

“There are 26 players, too many for the coach to choose for each specific game. It never shocks me that he decides to go with one or the other. Right or wrong in the opinion of each one, the coach has the right to make the decisions he makes.”
