Poland have confirmed Fernando Santos as their new national team head coach.
The 68-year-old was unveiled at a press conference on Tuesday, having left his role as Portugal coach after their shock quarter-final exit against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup.
Santos said: “It is an honour for us because we are talking about a great country. Poland is a great country with an extremely rich history and culture.
“The Polish national team has a great history. I remember great Polish teams, but also direct matches with Poland, difficult matches.
“Poland is a national team with very good players, one of the world’s best.
“From today I am Polish, I am one of you. We will do everything to provide Poles with a lot of joy.
“Every success requires hard work. Happiness doesn’t fall from the sky, you have to earn it. But I am sure that we will achieve a lot for the Polish national team and all Poles.”
Previous head coach Czeslaw Michniewicz left his role after his contract was not renewed by the Polish FA. Michniewicz had guided Poland to the round-0f-16 at the Qatar World Cup, where they were defeated 3-1 by France.
Having managed Portugal from 2014, Santos enjoyed success as he led his nation to the Euro 2016 title, their first international trophy, and the Nations League title in 2019.
Santos also coached Greece at Euro 2012 and reached the last 16 of the World Cup with them in 2014.
