Newcastle United could be prepared to pay Enzo Fernandez's £105 million release clause.
That is the fear of Portuguese club Benfica, who do not want to lose the young Argentina midfielder.
Fernandez had an outstanding World Cup with his nation, helping them to lift the trophy.
Now the 21-year-old is the subject of interest from several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, Manchester United, and Liverpool.
A Magpies offer has already been turned down, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, but they may return.
The fear of Benfica is that if a team pays the buyout clause, they cannot stop Fernandez from leaving in January.
