World Cup: Jay Jay Okocha gives verdict on Cameroon after 1-0 defeat to Switzerland

Former Nigeria International, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has said that Cameroon escaped being disgraced by Switzerland in their World Cup opener on Thursday.

The Africans conceded just one goal in the encounter but Okocha felt they should have been beaten more than that in the Group G clash.

Cameroon’s defeat to Switzerland meant three of the five nations that represent Africa in Qatar 2022 World Cup have lost their opening games. Ghana fell 3-2 to Portugal on Thursday, while Senegal had earlier been beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands.

Breel Embelo, who was supposed to be wearing the colours of Cameroon, but chose to play International football with Switzerland, scored the only goal to hand the Europeans all vital three points.

“The best chance of the half and it could have been the worst time to concede,” Jay Jay said on SuperSport.

“I think the manager couldn’t believe how free Akanji was. The Cameroonians were lucky not to have conceded there.”
