England and Tottenham star Harry Kane to receive Freedom of the City of London in January

England and Tottenham captain, Harry Kane will be awarded the Freedom of the City of London in January

The superstar footballer is the third-highest Premier League scorer of all time with 193 goals and is on track (51) to overhaul Wayne Rooney's record Three Lions total of 53 goals.

Kane, 29, from Walthamstow in East London, is set to receive the gong at a special ceremony because of his 'outstanding sporting achievements'.

He said: 'I am extremely proud and grateful to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London award. This is a proud moment for myself and my family.

'It is a real honour to be recognised by the city I grew up in and love, and I am looking forward to meeting those who nominated me at the award ceremony.'

Kane, widely considered one of the best strikers in the world, will lead Gareth Southgate's England to the Qatar World Cup, beginning later this month.

City of London Corporation Policy Chairman Chris Hayward said: 'We are delighted that Harry will be awarded the Freedom of the City. It is richly deserved.

'Harry is a superstar for so many football fans. He has made a massive contribution to sport and London.'

Hayward's deputy Keith Bottomley added: 'It is fantastic that Harry will receive a Freedom in recognition of everything he has achieved.

'Harry is, in every sense, at the top of his game. This Freedom will go some way towards expressing our admiration for his tremendous skill on the pitch, and our considerable pride in him.'

Kane began his professional career in 2009 and quickly progressed into Tottenham's first team at the age of 16. Since then he has won several awards, including three Premier League Golden Boots, the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot, and an MBE in 2019.
