Elche chief Mantecon takes charge of team after Almiron axe; discusses Bordalas arrival

Elche technical chief Sergio Mantecon is taking charge of the first team after the sacking of Jorge Almiron.

Almiron lasted just five weeks before being dismissed today.

Mantecon will be in charge while he also seeks a new coaching appointment, with former Valencia coach Jose Bordalas their preferred choice.

He said today: "The fact that I am here is not a good sign, like last year. These are situations that when one plans, one hopes will not occur. I've been at the club all my life and I'm here to help. Now it is considered necessary for me to be here and I must help.

“My job is to be in contact with football people. With Bordalás there is a personal relationship, but for now I have not spoken with him. It was all sudden because Jorge told us he would step aside.

"Between yesterday and today, it has been impossible due to the volume of work to prepare for the match. We have decided to give a little time to consider options. On a personal level, I haven't been able to activate anything."
