Aghahowa calls for inclusion of home-based players in Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles forward, Julius Aghahowa has called for the inclusion of home-based players in the present team.

The Super Eagles have been dominated by foreign-based professionals in recent years.

That has led to a consistent clamour for opportunities for players in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Only one local player, Ebube Duru, who plays for NPFL champions, Rivers United was included in the 23-man squad for the friendly against Portugal this week.

Aghahowa however believed that having more of them will make the Super Eagles more competitive.

He further stated that there must be opportunities for the players to prove their worth.

“Even if it’s one or two, let them have their chance. I remember back in the days we had good players that came from the local league and impressed in the national team,” Aghahowa told reporters.

“We are a product of the Nigerian league, we came into the national team and proved ourselves.

“When you come like an underdog from the local league you have a point to prove and you want to impress not just yourself but the whole fans.”
